'The natural world is often ignored. Beautiful, fascinating images are turned into the mundane as we continue our daily routine. I look to the forms and patterns that are the product of millions of years of evolution so that I can begin to understand, and in some way emulate, that beauty. My work is the product of my many interests in different disciplines, from graphics to fine art, maths to science. Like the subject matter, my work evolves.'
Mat derives a great deal of his inspiration from nature; living forms, biological structures and organic patterns. He has the capacity to reproduce these elements in 2D and 3D and yet simultaneously bring them to life.
Mat's creative and development processes are never contrived; he is open to artistic impetus at all times and works both methodically and sporadically to cultivate images and objects that, whilst being original in concept, are reassuringly familiar in form.
He is not intimidated by new materials or technology, but rather embraces the opportunity to experiment within the confines of a brief.
